Fighters Don’t Surrender

I dreamt last night.

Morning came.

I knew today was different.

I no longer felt sad for myself.

I felt sad for you.

I will not settle,

or negotiate,

or accept less.

I want happiness

and joy.

You have quit.

You tell me it’s ok.

You tell me it’s fine.

You tell me it is, what it is.

Your surrender makes me sad.

Fighters don’t surrender.

I realize this now.

Good luck with that which binds you.

My love must now fly free.

  1. Hi Cindy, I can relate to this poem. I have just left a three year relationship that wasn’t working. We must be true to ourselves, love ourselves, so that our lives can make a difference. We must not surrender. ~ Dennis

    1. We have a lot in common. I spent several years thinking the man referenced in the poem was one of the most confident and strong men I’ve ever know. Unfortunately, I eventually realized that I was the brave one in the relationship.

I have worked far too hard to become the woman I am, to surrender or settle. As Robin Williams shared, “I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel all alone.” In my opinion, they both stink, but alone is the lesser of the two evils. 🙂
