The Mask

Inspired by The Daily Post word prompt “fierce.”

  1. You had me at the title, I love to think about and learn about masks. I haven’t seen your blog before but I really like how you write your verse over an image, and the image of the mask in this post is really beautiful – as is your writing. The poem for me starts out simple but elegant: they thought she was fierce, they thought, in other words, that they knew her but they were wrong. Then your twist and wordplay at the end is brilliant and thought-provoking — she was a pawn, okay, but “in her own masquerade” — and I’m really thinking about that, how is she a pawn (not a queen, not in control) in her own — what? fantasy world? So she doesn’t even have control of her own “masquerade”? Strong ending, sad to think about, but very interesting!

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed and appreciated the piece. Although not the goal, a definite melancholy does exist, however, the intention of the overall theme is self-awareness and acceptance of
      uncontrollable harsh realities in life.
